The Minority in Parliament has urged the government to act quickly. They want decisive action to address the renewed violence in Bawku. They call for direct engagement with youth and key stakeholders to restore peace.
At a press briefing today, Rev John Ntim Fordjour spoke about the situation. He is the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee. He expressed deep concern over worsening security, which has caused loss of lives and property damage.
“We convey our deepest sympathies to bereaved families,” he said. He also extended thoughts to those injured and those who lost property due to violence.
Rev Fordjour stressed that the ongoing conflict needs a swift response. He highlighted the importance of engaging young people in affected communities. They are central to both the causes and solutions of unrest.
“One key strategy is for the government to engage honestly with youth,” he stated. “When their concerns are addressed, we can resolve root causes and restore peace.”
He noted that this engagement would support mediation efforts led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
“This will create an atmosphere for effective mediation and support from other stakeholders,” he added.
Rev Fordjour praised the Asantehene's leadership, calling his efforts “diligent” and yielding positive results. “Otumfuo has taken thoughtful steps toward restoring peace,” he said.
“However, this recent escalation is a setback,” he continued. “We call for calm so mediation can proceed without disruption.”
The clashes in Bawku have resulted in casualties and significant property damage. The conflict stems from longstanding ethnic and chieftaincy disputes, making resolution urgent.
The Minority urges the government to show leadership through meaningful dialogue. They advocate for inclusion and addressing immediate triggers of violence for long-term peace in the region.
