Eric Twum, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, has spoken out. He called for an end to politicizing the conflict in Bawku. He urged all stakeholders to focus on resolving the issue instead of seeking political gain.
In an interview on Channel One TV's Breakfast Daily, he emphasized unity. He said that resolving Bawku's longstanding issues requires a national approach. This approach should be free from political interference or bias.
Twum believes that politics should be removed from the situation. "We need to deal with the issue and get to the bottom of it," he stated.
His comments come amid discussions about remarks made by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno. During a recent visit to Bawku, the IGP suggested prioritizing local youth for police recruitment if they laid down their arms.
After facing backlash, the IGP clarified his statement. He explained that his comments were not rewards for violence but aimed at decentralizing police recruitment. The goal is to include individuals from remote and conflict-affected communities.
The Bawku conflict has lasted for years, causing loss of life and displacement. Despite multiple security operations, tensions remain high with periodic outbreaks of violence.
