Erroneous to think my role as Torkornoo's lawyer in injunction application against probe affect optics - Godfred Dame

Former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame has rejected claims of a conflict of interest.

He is representing suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo in her injunction application.

Critics, including Prof Kwaku Ansa-Asare, have raised concerns about this involvement.

Prof Ansa-Asare stated that Mr. Dame's role complicates the case. He noted that Torkornoo was appointed during Mr. Dame's tenure as Attorney General.

Mr. Dame responded to these criticisms on Joy FM's Newsnite. He called the claims baseless and unfounded.

He explained that his involvement is not just about Justice Torkornoo. It focuses on challenging the unconstitutional handling of the petition process.

Mr. Dame emphasized that he seeks purely constitutional reliefs.

He believes his decision aligns with his commitment to upholding the rule of law.

The legal action targets procedural irregularities in the suspension process, not personal ties.

Legal analysts highlight critical questions about judicial independence and executive authority in Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

The injunction application challenges President Mahama's suspension order under Article 146, claiming it violates due process protections.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule soon on this application. It aims to halt the removal committee's proceedings and suspend the Chief Justice's suspension warrant.

The committee includes notable members like Justices Gabriel Pwamang and Samuel Adibu-Asiedu, along with former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo.

This situation follows Chief Justice Torkornoo's controversial suspension on April 22, 2025, amid misconduct allegations.
