Evacuate now or risk disaster – GWL warns as Weija Dam spillage begins

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has started a controlled spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam. They urge residents in downstream communities to evacuate immediately to avoid disaster.

On Friday, May 23, GWL announced that water levels at the dam reached 45 feet. This is just two feet below its maximum operating level due to the rainy season.

To protect the dam's structure and prevent disasters, minimal spillage has begun. GWL warns inhabitants downstream to evacuate the area for safety.

At-risk communities include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Adakope, and nearby areas.

GWL urges residents in these zones to move to higher ground right away. They should follow safety instructions from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other agencies.

The company also asked the Ga West Municipal Assembly to desilt the estuary. Removing refuse along the river course will help ensure free water flow into the sea and reduce flooding risks.

GWL requests that all affected residents cooperate with safety instructions from the Municipal Assembly. This cooperation is vital for their safety and to prevent incidents.

They emphasized that public cooperation is essential to avoid past flood disasters caused by dam overflows.
