Ghanaian media personality Afia Pokua, known as Vim Lady, spoke about politicians seeking medical treatment abroad. She reminded Ghanaians that this is not a new trend. Former President Jerry John Rawlings also went to London for care under a false name.
“Rawlings, hailed as a nationalist, used the name ‘Paul Gyamfi’ for treatment. Why? The system wasn’t reliable back then,” she said on the Gyaso Gyaso program.
Vim Lady highlighted a deeper issue: Ghana’s failing healthcare system. She criticized leaders who seek better services abroad while doing little to improve local care. She mentioned Rawlings’ daughter, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, as another example.
“If our healthcare and medical education were strong, why didn’t Rawlings keep his daughter here?” she asked. Zanetor studied medicine in Northern Ireland instead of at the University of Ghana Medical School.
For Vim Lady, the real problem is the lack of commitment to improving healthcare in Ghana. She urged citizens to focus on demanding meaningful reforms rather than political attacks.
“Let’s demand better healthcare policies instead of pointing fingers,” she stressed. “If we don’t fix our hospitals now, it could be anyone tomorrow. Let’s stop the hypocrisy!”
