Everton has condemned death threats against James Tarkowski and his family. This follows a tackle during Wednesday's Merseyside derby at Anfield. Tarkowski received a yellow card for a late challenge on Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister. However, the Premier League refereeing body later stated he should have been sent off.
In a statement, Everton said, "The club is aware of threats made towards James Tarkowski and his family on social media." They called such behavior "completely unacceptable" in football and society. The club is working with Tarkowski and his wife, Samantha. They are also ready to engage with social media companies and assist police in any investigation.
Everton strongly condemns online or offline intimidation directed at players and their families. Samantha Tarkowski described the abuse as "beyond disgusting" in an Instagram post. She expressed concern over the level of threats her husband receives, including wishes for his death.
She emphasized that he is more than just a footballer. He is a husband, son, brother, friend, and father to their two children. Samantha criticized the disgraceful behavior of some fans, stating it goes beyond football.
After the match, Tarkowski spoke to Mac Allister on the pitch. He apologized for the tackle, which he acknowledged was not great. Tarkowski explained that he expected a 50-50 challenge but caught Mac Allister high instead.
He confirmed that Mac Allister accepted his apology after their conversation. "Not a great one from me," he admitted about the tackle.
