Every district will be responsible for its sanitation – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama announced that each district will manage its own sanitation.

He stated that the Cabinet will soon discuss decentralizing the sanitation budget. This change will make every district responsible for its sanitation efforts.

Mahama emphasized that cleanliness will be a key performance measure for MMDAs. Their ability to maintain cleanliness will affect their tenure in office.

During his thank you tour in Dodowa, he said, “Cabinet will meet on decentralization of the sanitation budget.” He added, “Cleanliness will determine whether MMDAs stay or go.”

Mahama expressed gratitude for the support he received, saying, “To whom much is given, much is expected.” He promised more resources for assemblies to implement development projects and effective sanitation programs.

These initiatives aim to keep districts clean and dignified. The plan will be legally supported and funded through partnerships with local assemblies and private service providers.

MMDCs must ensure successful National Sanitation Day events in their districts. Mahama stressed that Greater Accra should represent a clean and green Ghana.

Meanwhile, journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has called for assemblies to regain control over sanitation funds. He criticized the government’s reliance on Zoomlion for managing waste.

Awuni compared this partnership to working with a convicted paedophile on child protection campaigns. He believes local assemblies should hire groups like BuzStopBoys instead.

In a recent post, he encouraged Mahama by saying he is on the right path. He warned against distractions from corrupt individuals benefiting from the current system.
