Every human being is a political animal – Ansa-Asare on CJ petitions

Kwaku Ansa-Asare, a former Director of the Ghana School of Law, spoke about the petitions to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He believes politics is a natural part of human life.

During an interview with TV3 on May 7, 2025, he addressed concerns about politicisation. Ghanaians are debating the legitimacy and neutrality of these petitions.

Ansa-Asare stated that the issue is not with the Constitution itself. Instead, it lies with those who use its provisions. He noted that political interests influence how constitutional processes are interpreted and implemented.

He acknowledged that while the petitions are constitutionally valid, public perception matters. “It is politicians who set the machinery in motion,” he explained. This leads many to conclude that politicisation is occurring.

Ansa-Asare emphasized that those in power must restore public trust. “Operators of the Constitution need to change this perception,” he said.

He also pointed out that allegations of political bias will persist regardless of which party is in power. “People will always claim politicisation based on who appoints,” he remarked.

Despite these challenges, Ansa-Asare urged confidence in the constitutional process. “We must trust that operators will follow what the Constitution mandates,” he concluded.
