Excavators are not mobile phones you can put in your pocket rollout tracking system – Ken Ashigbey

The Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining has urged the government to implement a nationwide excavator tracking system. This system would aid in the fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey.

Dr. Ken Ashigbey, the Coalition’s Convenor, emphasized that excavators are not like mobile phones. He stated that with tracking, police can monitor their activities effectively.

If an excavator is used improperly, police can identify it at checkpoints. They will use QR codes on vehicles for this purpose. Dr. Ashigbey believes this system could help combat illegal mining.

He made these comments during a visit to the Ghana Mine Repository and Tracking Control Centre with A Rocha Ghana.

In related news, President John Dramani Mahama announced a permanent ban on mining in forest reserves. He discussed his administration's first 120 days and its five-point strategy for reforming the mining sector.

This strategy includes regulatory reforms and stronger law enforcement measures. It also involves collaboration with stakeholders and reclaiming degraded lands. Mahama noted that seven out of nine reserves have been reclaimed from illegal miners.

On March 20, 2025, a legislative instrument was presented to Parliament to amend regulations on mining in forest reserves. This amendment removes the president's power to approve such activities.

Mahama plans to further amend the Minerals and Mining Act of 2003. This amendment aims to completely prohibit mining in forest reserves legally and effectively.
