Felicity Ahafianyo, head of the Central Analysis and Forecasting Office at the Ghana Meteorological Agency, has issued a public advisory. She urges residents to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flash floods.
Her warning comes after severe flooding on May 18. The downpour submerged neighborhoods in Accra, Kumasi, and other cities. Thousands were displaced, infrastructure was damaged, and three lives were lost in Adenta.
On Joy FM's Top Story on May 19, she noted that the peak rainy season is approaching. More frequent and heavier rains are expected from late May to June. “We are getting to the peak of the rainy season,” she stated.
Ms. Ahafianyo advised residents in flood-prone areas to take action. This includes relocating if necessary and following emergency instructions closely. “If you are around flood-prone areas, we need to relocate,” she emphasized.
She highlighted the importance of community involvement in preventing floods. Drainage systems often get blocked during heavy rains. She encouraged residents to organize clean-up efforts for gutters.
“If our gutters are choked, let us do communal labor to desilt them,” she urged. She also recommended following GMet’s social media for weather updates.
