FDA destroys massive haul of opioids seized in joint operation

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has started disposing of unregistered opioids. These high-strength drugs were illegally imported into Ghana.

The destruction follows a court order obtained by the FDA. The drugs were seized during an inspection on March 14, 2025.

This operation involved several agencies. These included the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), National Security, National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

The FDA reported that the seized drugs included:

- 26 cartons of Rahol Tapentadol (250mg)
- 160 cartons of Tafradol Tapentadol (120mg)
- 40 cartons of Timaking Tapentadol (120mg)
- 4 cartons of Timaking Tapentadol (250mg)

Tapentadol is a strong opioid used for severe pain management. Its illegal importation poses serious public health risks.

In a Facebook post, the FDA stated, “We are safely disposing of a massive haul of unregistered opioids.”

Authorities say this action is part of efforts to combat illicit pharmaceuticals. They aim to protect public health in Ghana.
