The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is launching a nationwide operation. This aims to tackle the rising abuse of opioids in Ghana. The FDA is working with several partners, including the Narcotics Control Commission and the Ghana Police Service.
On April 11, Dr. Olivia Agyekumaa Boateng spoke to the media. She is the FDA’s Director of Tobacco and Substance Abuse. She reaffirmed the FDA's commitment to public health and safety.
Dr. Boateng mentioned plans to enhance collaboration with stakeholders. The FDA will also expand public awareness efforts against opioid misuse. “We are telling everybody that we are coming at them,” she said.
She highlighted that this issue affects many young people. The FDA will use various strategies beyond public education on drug dangers.
Dr. Boateng stressed the need to remove illicit drugs from the market. These drugs contribute significantly to increasing abuse rates. The FDA aims for stricter control measures moving forward.
Additionally, they will collaborate with mental health services. This partnership will help provide support for those already addicted to opioids.
