The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is struggling to enforce a ban on Grand Chateaux Sangria Forte. This product was recalled from the Ghanaian market two months ago.
On March 18, 2025, the FDA announced the recall of the 250ml Sangria Tetra Pack due to safety concerns. However, checks by JoyNews show that it is still available for sale. This raises questions about how effective the enforcement process is.
Vigil Prah Anshong, the FDA’s Director of Enforcement, spoke to JoyNews about these challenges. He said the recall has only been partially successful. The biggest issues are at Ghana’s eastern border in Aflao.
In March 2025, the FDA issued a recall alert for this product. They directed the importer to remove all items from stores within 14 days. However, only a fraction of products were recalled—9,073 out of 33,811 cartons imported.
A second phase of recall was started as a mop-up operation. Complications arose when unauthorized parties began importing the product again. The FDA instructed the principal importer to continue recalling while increasing border monitoring.
Despite these efforts, there are serious enforcement gaps at Aflao border. Importers are reportedly finding ways around directives. Mr. Anshong noted that determined individuals will bypass systems regardless of obstacles.
The FDA warns parents not to let children consume this product. Its packaging may look appealing but it contains alcohol and is banned for safety reasons.
The Authority is working with customs officials and border security agencies to improve enforcement and ensure complete withdrawal from the market.
