FDA to crack down on illicit drug importation in Ashanti Region

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) of Ghana is stepping up efforts. They aim to combat illegal drug importation and sales in the Ashanti Region.

Regional Director John Laryea Odei-Tettey announced this plan. The FDA will work with other agencies on street operations. These operations will target tramadol, Red, and other opioids.

Mr. Odei-Tettey spoke at an anti-opioid forum in Kumasi. He explained that the initiative aims to reduce abuse. It also seeks to preserve these drugs for legitimate medical use.

“We are clamping down on misuse and illegal importation,” he stated. He clarified that tramadol is not poisonous or banned. The problem lies in its misuse and illegal entry into the country.

He noted that unregistered products are not approved by the FDA. Tramadol products with lower strengths, like 50mg and 100mg, are allowed. Specific registered brands can be used safely.

“Tramadol products over 100mg should not be imported,” he added. This action aims to protect young people from misuse or abuse of these medicines.

The FDA wants to prevent recreational use of these drugs. They want tramadol available for legitimate medical purposes only. This approach addresses appropriate health conditions effectively.

“We are working to ensure tramadol is medically available for proper ailments,” he concluded.
