Failure to notify CJ 6 weeks after petitions is a grave constitutional breach – Godfred Dame tells SC

Former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame criticized President John Dramani Mahama. He claims Mahama failed to notify Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo about petitions for her removal. This delay is an “egregious violation” of Ghana’s Constitution.

Mr. Dame made these statements on Tuesday, May 6. He was arguing in court against the Chief Justice's suspension. He emphasized that the Chief Justice must be informed promptly about any petitions affecting her office.

Dame stated, “It constitutes an egregious violation of the Constitution.” He noted that waiting six weeks to notify her is unacceptable. Such delays undermine natural justice and transparency in the 1992 Constitution.

His comments come amid increased legal and political scrutiny. There are concerns about constitutional compliance and judicial independence regarding the Chief Justice's suspension process.
