Failure to sack Sammy Gyamfi will undermine Code of Conduct – Elvis Darko

Elvis Darko, editor of Newscenta Newspaper, has issued a warning to President John Dramani Mahama. He cautioned that not dismissing Sammy Gyamfi from the Ghana Gold Board could harm the credibility of the new Code of Conduct for presidential appointees.

This warning follows a viral video. The video shows Gyamfi giving an undisclosed amount of money to Patricia Asiedua Asiama, known as Nana Agradaa. Many people are outraged by this act due to Agradaa’s controversial background.

The motive behind the cash handover is unclear. Critics argue it contradicts the values of integrity and transparency in Mahama's Code of Conduct. This code aims to set higher ethical standards for public officials and rebuild trust in government.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Darko called this a critical test for Mahama's leadership. He stated that if the president does not act, he will be in a difficult position. “This is his first test after launching the code,” Darko said.

Darko warned that failing to dismiss Gyamfi could weaken enforcement of the code. It may also suggest future appointees can violate it without consequences. He questioned whether Mahama would have the authority to dismiss others if they breach the code.

He also noted potential internal conflict within the National Democratic Congress (NDC). If Mahama dismisses others but keeps Gyamfi, party members may protest. “The president is in a fix,” Darko concluded.

Sammy Gyamfi issued an apology on May 11 for his actions. He described it as a “private act of kindness” that became public unintentionally. However, many still demand accountability despite his apology.

In response to this controversy, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has summoned Gyamfi for questioning. The presidency faces increasing pressure from both the public and party members to uphold principles outlined in the new code.
