Fast-track implementation of Conduct of Public Officers Bill – Edem Senanu tells govt

Edem Senanu, Co-Chairman of the Citizen Movement Against Corruption, has made a call to the government. He wants them to speed up the passage and implementation of the Conduct of Public Officers Bill.

His request follows President John Dramani Mahama's announcement on May 14. The president stated that no further action will be taken against Sammy Gyamfi. Gyamfi is the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board. He was seen in a controversial video giving money to evangelist Nana Agradaa.

This video caused public outrage and raised concerns about legal violations. People worried about breaches of Ghana’s Foreign Exchange Act and the Code of Conduct for public officials. In an interview with Channel One Newsroom, Senanu pointed out that the current Code offers limited grounds for action.

He noted that the Conduct of Public Officers Bill was introduced by a previous government but remains unpassed. Senanu urged the current administration to revisit this bill. He believes its implementation would create a clearer framework for accountability.

Senanu explained that this legislation would help address misconduct by public officials. It would also make it easier to identify sanctions related to lifestyle audits. Currently, only the president can take action under existing policies.

However, if there were a law in place, any citizen could raise issues or go to court if they see a breach.
