A KIA truck transporting dynamite cables from Accra crashed on Tuesday.
The accident happened on the Memfi-Koforidua road at Amanprobi, near Mampong. The truck experienced brake failure while descending a hill. It lost control and collided head-on with a Toyota Land Cruiser (V8).
After the collision, the KIA truck caught fire. Fortunately, two mates jumped out before the flames engulfed the vehicle. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic.
Sadly, the driver of the KIA truck died instantly from the impact. His body was later retrieved by police and sent to a mortuary for identification.
Emergency Response and Ongoing Investigation
Fire service and police arrived quickly to extinguish the flames. They prevented the fire from spreading to nearby properties or vehicles. Injured individuals were transported to medical facilities for treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver may have avoided security checkpoints on the Accra-Kumasi highway. This was likely due to his cargo of dynamite cables, which require special permits.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that he diverted onto Koforidua-Bunso Road to bypass law enforcement checkpoints.
A Road in Crisis
Commuters have long called Mamfi-Koforidua Road a “death trap” because of its winding nature. Residents are urging authorities to address its deteriorating conditions urgently.
They want stricter controls for vehicles carrying hazardous materials implemented immediately.
Call for Urgent Government Intervention
Local leaders and transport unions are frustrated with ongoing neglect of transport infrastructure in their area. They urge government officials to reconstruct and expand critical sections of this road.
They also recommend installing speed ramps and warning signs at sharp bends. Stakeholders propose enforcing stricter regulations for vehicles carrying hazardous materials as well.
