Fight Galamsey without compromise -Minister

Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson has urged the Western Central Police Command to fight illegal mining, known as galamsey. He emphasized the need for commitment and integrity in this battle.

At a meeting in Tarkwa, he expressed concern about reports of police accepting bribes from illegal miners. He warned that Ghana's food security is at serious risk due to galamsey's impact on water bodies and farmland.

Minister Nelson stated, “There’s a lot to be done on galamsey.” He acknowledged both positive and negative aspects of police efforts against it. While he praised their work, he highlighted the urgent need to address the negatives.

“Our environment is being destroyed for gold,” he said. This destruction puts lives at risk. Some believe bottled water can replace clean sources, but this mindset is dangerous.

He continued, “We must care about areas affected by galamsey.” Leaders should prioritize long-term sustainability over short-term gains. The health and well-being of communities depend on it.

The minister stressed that food security is in jeopardy. Land used for crops like cassava is threatened by illegal mining activities.

He expressed sadness over compromised officers in the fight against galamsey. A caller reported that some officers accept bribes between GH₵2,000 and GH₵3,000. While money matters, earning it honestly is more fulfilling.

Western Central Police Commander DCOP Desmond Boampong pledged support against illegal mining. However, he mentioned intimidation from individuals claiming to be NDC members as a challenge.

These individuals allegedly harass police during arrests. DCOP Boampong requested assistance from the regional minister to address these issues hindering their efforts against galamsey.
