President John Dramani Mahama has addressed the issue of illegal mining, known as galamsey. He described the fight against it as complex.
Mahama emphasized his government's determination to combat this problem. He praised the Armed Forces and security services for their efforts. "We will continue to achieve successes against selfish companies," he stated.
Speaking at the May Day celebration in Accra, he acknowledged the challenges ahead. "I did not expect to win this fight in four months," he said. However, he assured that they would not give up.
He declared, “As far as the fight against galamsey is concerned, I say Aluta Continua.”
In related news, the Generational Rights Protection Society has suspended its protest planned for April 29. The group aimed to demand urgent action against illegal mining.
After a meeting with police, they agreed to postpone their demonstration. The police requested more time for engagement and planning a new date.
The group's spokesperson expressed gratitude towards the police for their collaboration during previous protests. They acknowledged the stress faced but accepted the request to delay.
Activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor criticized organizers of the “Galamsey Must Fall” demonstration for canceling due to low attendance. He stressed that true commitment shows persistence despite setbacks.
Barker-Vormawor pointed out that past demonstrations continued even with small numbers and arrests.
