The Eastern Regional House of Chiefs has cautioned that the fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey, will not succeed unless the government actively involves traditional leaders in the licensing and regulatory processes.
According to the chiefs, successive governments have sidelined them in managing mineral resources, despite the devastating effects of illegal mining on water bodies and the environment in the Eastern Region.
The Regional Security Council, led by Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has launched a task force to combat galamsey and has been engaging stakeholders, including the chiefs.
During a meeting, the minister acknowledged the importance of traditional authorities, stating, “We may not even know your ritual days, so we called you here as we enter your land, forests, and water bodies to seek guidance.”
However, the chiefs insisted that without their direct involvement, the government's efforts would be ineffective. Akwamuhene Odeneho Kwafo Akoto emphasized that paramount chiefs, as allodial title holders, should be empowered to oversee their lands and take action against illegal mining activities.
Akyem Kotokuhene, Oseadeyo Dr. Frimpong Manso, noted that while galamsey has harmful environmental effects, it also sustains many households and drives the local economy. He urged a strategic approach that balances economic benefits with environmental protection.
Similarly, Akyem Tafohene, Osabarima Adusei Peasah, representing Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, criticized past governments for introducing community mining, describing it as “galamsey in disguise.”
Okuapehene Oseadeyo Kwasi Akuffo also raised concerns about a mining prospecting license granted in Akuapem without the traditional council’s knowledge.
The President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, Nene Sakite, called on the government to recognize the role of traditional leaders in ensuring a sustainable fight against illegal mining.
“We have the capacity to help our communities and this country. Do not sidestep us,” he urged.
