The Ministry of Finance has approved new allowances for senior staff unions.
These unions are in Ghana’s public tertiary institutions.
The approval follows successful negotiations between the government and the unions.
It was granted on May 21, 2025, to three groups:
1. Senior Staff Association–University of Ghana (SSA-UoG)
2. Federation of Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG)
3. Technical University Administrators’ Association of Ghana (TUAAG)
The new allowances will take effect from November 1, 2024.
This information is in a statement signed by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
The letter states that all other allowances will follow government-approved rates.
It was shared with key stakeholders, including:
- The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department
- The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission
- Deputy ministers for finance and education
- The Auditor-General
- The Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission
This revision comes after the unions declared an indefinite strike.
They cited the government's failure to honor a six-month-old agreement.
Meanwhile, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has intervened.
They directed the striking university unions to end their strike immediately.
This directive is based on Section 139(1)(d) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
