Finance and Energy Ministers inaugurate implementation committee for Ghana’s second gas processing plant

Ghana is taking a big step toward energy independence. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor inaugurated the Implementation Committee for the Second Gas Processing Plant (GPP II) on May 12.

The event took place at the Ministry of Energy. This marks an important milestone in reducing reliance on expensive imported fuels. It also aims to improve local gas infrastructure.

Dr. Forson expressed concern about Ghana's dependence on costly liquid fuels. He noted that the country will spend over $1 billion on these fuels this year. He called this cost a burden on both the economy and Ghanaians.

“With this new Gas Processing Plant, we can save nearly $500 million,” he said. The project is expected to create over 1,000 jobs for citizens.

The Deputy Minister for Energy will chair the Implementation Committee. Their task is to develop a comprehensive plan for executing GPP II.

Dr. Forson emphasized that delays are unacceptable, stating, “the time for bureaucracy is over.” He has given the committee four weeks to finalize their strategy.

He highlighted the importance of the existing Atuabo Gas Plant in meeting Ghana’s energy needs. Dr. Forson believes GPP II will provide even greater benefits.

“Atuabo Gas has been a lifeline for Ghana,” he said. “GPP II will be a game-changer for our energy security and economic stability.”
