Fire destroys textile Shop at Lapaz Market, owner hospitalized

A textile shop at the Lapaz Market in Accra caught fire on Sunday, April 27. One person was hospitalized due to the incident. The fire started on the top floor and destroyed bedding materials and goods worth millions of cedis.

The victim, a young woman, collapsed upon seeing her shop in flames. She was taken to the Lapaz Community Hospital for treatment. Firefighters from the Abelenkpe branch of the Ghana National Fire Service responded quickly.

They managed to stop the fire from spreading to nearby shops. The victim’s mother co-owns the shop and was on the ground floor when her grandchild raised the alarm about the fire.

ADO I Emmanuel Akwetey, Operations Officer at Abelenkpe GNFS, spoke to Channel One News. He said that the cause of the fire is still unknown. Investigations are ongoing to find out what happened.

"We tried our best to ensure the fire doesn’t extend to adjoining shops," he stated. "Our men are still conducting investigations." He added that at an appropriate time, they will invite the owner for a report.
