A large fire broke out at the Maaha Beach Resort on May 28, 2025. The resort is located in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region. The fire destroyed several beachfront structures, including guest accommodations near the main pool.
The blaze reportedly started around 7 p.m. at Vision Beach, a nearby resort. It is believed to have begun in the kitchen and quickly spread to the front desk area. From there, it moved into parts of Maaha Beach Resort.
An eyewitness spoke to Citi News anonymously about the situation. They described how difficult it was to contain the fire initially. A fire tender from Atuabo Gas Processing Plant could not help due to the nature of the blaze.
“The fire didn’t start from our end but from Vision Beach,” said the witness. They explained that it began in the kitchen and spread quickly. The Ghana Gas fire tender passed by but could not assist because of their chemicals.
Efforts were made to call for additional firefighting support. The personal assistant of a local MP contacted stations in Axim and nearby areas for urgent help.
The delay allowed flames to consume more structures before help arrived from Axim and other towns.
The full extent of damage is still being assessed. This incident is a significant loss for one of the region's top beach resorts, popular with tourists.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement on what caused the fire or if there were any injuries.
