Typhoon Greenfield Development Ltd and MKS PAMP, along with Development Gold International (DGI), have launched unique gold bars. These bars celebrate the first export of traceable and responsibly produced gold from Ghanaian small-scale mines.
The presentation occurred during the Mining in Motion summit. It took place at a gala dinner at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City Accra. The King of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, received the donation.
Six gold bars were donated for auction. Proceeds will support Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II’s charities focused on land restoration and clean water conservation.
Several dignitaries attended the event. They included Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Ghana's Minister of Land and Natural Resources, and ministers from Malawi, Niger, Liberia, DRC, Guinea-Conakry, Somalia, and Cote d’Ivoire.
This partnership marks a historic achievement for Typhoon Greenfield Development Ltd, MKS PAMP, and DGI. The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) backs this initiative. The first 445 grams of gold came from Typhoon's Adomanu mine and was refined in Switzerland.
This effort is part of DGI's initiative to help small-scale mining meet international standards. This includes adhering to the Development Gold Ghana Performance Standard and LBMA Responsible Sourcing Programme.
This milestone reflects years of collaboration in formalizing small-scale mining in Ghana. It positions Ghana as a credible source of LBMA-compliant gold from small-scale miners.
Max Afriyie-Barwuah is President of DGI. He stated that this achievement is a major milestone for Ghana's gold industry. It shows small-scale miners' commitment to meeting international standards.
Kwaku Afrifa Nsiah-Asare is CEO of Typhoon Greenfield Development Ltd. He expressed excitement about pioneering this responsible mining initiative with DGI. Their operations are now assessed under the Development Gold Ghana Performance Standard.
Omar Liess is Chief Commercial Officer of MKS PAMP. He noted that this partnership advances responsible sourcing in artisanal mining in Ghana.
Ruth Crowell is Chief Executive of LBMA. She expressed encouragement over this announcement as it aligns with LBMA’s goals for responsible sourcing.
DGI’s Development Gold Ghana Performance Standard was created with TDi Sustainability experts to assess small-scale miners' practices independently.
The standard aims to redefine small-scale gold mining in light of past illegal activities causing environmental issues like deforestation and pollution.
The initiative enhances traceability through DGI’s MineTrace platform while ensuring sustainable practices in mining operations.
Assheton Carter is Executive Chair of TDi Sustainability. He praised DGI for creating a framework that improves practices at small-scale mines while ensuring compliance with international standards.
