A joint anti-galamsey operation took place in the Ashanti Region. The Mankranso District Police Command and Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly led it. They seized five heavy excavators and multiple firearms in Mpasaaso and Achiase communities.
The operation occurred on Monday, June 2, 2025. It aimed to combat illegal mining activities in the region. Local authorities intensified their efforts against these destructive practices.
According to DSP Godwin Ahianyo, the raid targeted active illegal mining sites. Several miners were found working without authorization. Upon seeing the security team, they fled, leaving behind equipment and weapons.
A search of the abandoned sites revealed:
- One CAL 9mm pistol with three rounds of live ammunition
- Four pump-action guns
- Twelve live BB cartridges
- Five live AA cartridges
- Five excavators
The authorities impounded the excavators at the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly. The weapons and ammunition are now with the Mankranso District Police for further investigation.
Authorities suspect that illegal miners may have had armed protection. This raises concerns about criminal networks involved in illegal mining in Ghana’s forest zones.
“The Regional Police Command commends all officers involved,” said DSP Ahianyo. He urged the public to provide credible information to help law enforcement.
This operation highlights growing national concern over environmental degradation from galamsey activities. Local residents and advocates have called for decisive action to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
Monday’s raid adds momentum to the fight against galamsey. Security agencies are increasing surveillance and interventions in hotspots across the country.
