Ghana Water Limited (GWL) is taking action against illegal water connections. In the Ashanti South Region, they partnered with the Kumasi Central Police Service. Together, they arrested five individuals for unlawfully tapping into the national water supply.
The arrests occurred on Wednesday, May 7. This effort is part of GWL’s campaign to reduce commercial losses. They aim to ensure fair access to water for all residents.
The suspects were caught after not paying surcharges for their illegal connections. The total amount owed was GH₵31,803.97. Three of the suspects have paid GH₵11,515.00 so far. The other two remain in police custody until they pay.
GWL officials are worried about rising illegal connections and siphoning in the region. These activities contribute significantly to Non-Revenue Water (NRW). They reduce company revenue and hinder infrastructure upgrades and maintenance.
The arrests happened in various locations, including Denyame and Dakodwom. Other areas included Kwadaso Estate and Santasi Apire. GWL encourages residents to report any suspicious activity related to illegal connections.
The company plans to continue its collaboration with the police service. Their goal is to eliminate illegal connections in the Ashanti Region.
