Flashback: How Mahama promised to grant amnesty to Galamsey convicts

During the 2024 campaign, candidate John Dramani Mahama made a promise. He assured Ghanaians he would grant amnesty to galamsey convicts.

Mahama believes these convicts are not the real kingpins of illegal mining. Instead, they are individuals used by local DCEs and Ministers. He thinks these officials benefit from illegal mining activities in Ghana.

The president described the convicted individuals as victims of circumstances. He emphasized the need for their reform to prevent future involvement in galamsey.

"I will grant amnesty to people convicted of galamsey," he stated. "Those imprisoned are not the actual perpetrators. If anyone should be imprisoned, it should be the DCEs and Ministers involved."
