Flogging traders approach not the way to go - Sam Pyne tells Kumasi Mayor

Former Kumasi Mayor, Sam Pyne, has criticized the current Mayor's approach. He called it “undemocratic” and potentially harmful.

Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi threatened to use force against traders on pavements. This statement was made during a press conference on April 14.

In an interview with Joy FM's Newsnight on April 15, Mr. Pyne expressed his concerns. He acknowledged that managing congestion and street trading is challenging. However, he believes flogging is not the answer.

He stated that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has byelaws for such issues. These byelaws address various offenses and infractions effectively.

Mr. Pyne warned that a hardline approach could cause public tension and resistance. He emphasized the need for strategic enforcement and infrastructure development instead of force.

He mentioned his administration’s efforts to relocate traders and reduce congestion through planned market expansions.

“One key solution is completing the Central Market Phase Two,” he said. This facility will include a large terminal to remove vehicles from streets, reducing congestion significantly.

Traders tend to follow passenger flow; removing vehicles will encourage them to move as well.

Amnesty International Ghana also condemned the Mayor's remarks. They described his comments as irresponsible and undemocratic.

According to Amnesty International, these statements undermine rule of law and responsible leadership principles.
