Flogging traders not responsible leadership - Amnesty International rebukes Kumasi Mayor

Amnesty International Ghana has condemned recent remarks by Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi. They called his comments irresponsible and undemocratic.

During a press conference on April 14, the Mayor threatened traders selling on pavements. He said he would unleash his men on them in the central business district.

Amnesty International stated that these comments undermine the rule of law. They also criticized the Mayor's "military-democratic" approach as dangerous and a human rights violation.

The organization emphasized that flogging traders is not lawful or acceptable. They noted that while selling on pavements is not ideal, it stems from poor planning and political neglect.

Successive governments have failed to provide safe alternatives for traders. This has forced many onto the streets to earn a living.

Amnesty International urged the Mayor to retract his threats. They encouraged him to focus on constructive solutions for congestion in the city.

Enforcement should respect human dignity and follow legal boundaries, they added. Traders must be supported to conduct their business without fear of violence or intimidation.

Mr. Nyantakyi reiterated that human rights protections apply to all citizens, including those in informal sectors.

Amnesty International will continue monitoring the situation closely. They advocate for the safety, rights, and livelihoods of street traders in Kumasi.
