The Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Major (Rtd) Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, clarified the Anti-Flood Taskforce's operations. This taskforce was formed by President John Dramani Mahama due to concerns about Ghana’s rainy season readiness.
During an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, Major Kuyon explained the taskforce's main role. It assesses flood-prone areas rather than directly intervening or controlling floods.
“The taskforce was only to confirm the risk in some areas,” he said. After their assessment, they briefed the President. He then visited these areas himself.
Major Kuyon emphasized that this taskforce is just one part of a larger effort. NADMO coordinates with various state institutions for flood preparedness.
“The rest of the job is NADMO’s responsibility,” he added. NADMO collaborates with agencies like the Meteorological Service and the Ghana Armed Forces.
His comments aim to clear up misconceptions about the taskforce's role. While it raised awareness, long-term flood management relies on a multi-agency effort led by NADMO.
