Former Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah has spoken about flooding in Ghana. He blames this issue on widespread indiscipline among citizens and law enforcement.
On JoyNews' Newsfile programme, he argued that the problem is not just infrastructural. Instead, it largely results from human negligence and a disregard for laws.
“This is about indiscipline, nothing more,” he stated firmly. He pointed out that both law enforcers and builders in unauthorized areas are at fault.
Mr. Tuah-Yeboah believes Ghana has enough regulations for urban development. However, weak enforcement and public disregard for planning rules create challenges.
His comments came after floods hit parts of Greater Accra on Sunday, 18 May. These floods led to the confirmed deaths of five people.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) reported three victims from Ga East Municipality and two from Adenta.
NADMO attributed these fatalities to poorly constructed drainage systems and unchecked development in flood-prone areas.
Richard Amo Yartey, NADMO’s Director of Inspectorate, discussed the ongoing issues with unregulated building. He noted that ineffective flood management strategies continue to be a problem for the country.
