The Member of Parliament for Bantama, Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, has called for a national approach to urban flooding in Ghana.
He spoke during a statement by Adentan MP, Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, about recent floods. Mr. Asenso-Boakye emphasized that flooding is a national challenge needing urgent action.
Growing up in Bantama, he understands the challenges flooding brings to urban areas. He acknowledged past government efforts but noted the need for more effective solutions.
The Akufo-Addo administration has made significant investments in flood control infrastructure. However, he warned that building on waterways and dumping waste will worsen the problem.
Hon. Asenso-Boakye stated that Ghana has sufficient laws to prevent flooding issues. The real problem lies in enforcing these laws effectively.
He urged accountability from Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies. These bodies are responsible for enforcing planning and sanitation regulations under the Local Governance Act.
He also called for community-led action against flooding. Citizens must take responsibility for their environment and oppose illegal construction on waterways.
“There is power in community action—sometimes stronger than government,” he emphasized.
