Professor Nana Ama Klutse is the Acting CEO of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). She has called for a nationwide discussion on Ghana’s flooding crisis.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom, Prof. Klutse described the alarming rise in floods. Areas that were once safe are now experiencing flooding. She linked this to heavy rainfall and harmful human activities.
These activities include construction on waterways and wetlands. "We have seen flooding in places we never expected," she said. "This could be due to heavy rain or our own actions."
Prof. Klutse emphasized the need for education among Ghanaians. She suggested that builders should leave space for gardening instead of paving everything.
"We cannot stop the rain," she noted, adding that more rain is expected this year. This means more flooding will likely occur.
"If water can't flow through our gutters, we will face severe flooding," she warned. The poor will suffer most, while the rich can navigate through it in their vehicles.
She urged everyone to engage in discussions about preventing flooding. "When there is flooding, we all suffer—rich or poor," she stated.
