Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader in parliament, criticized the NDC government. He said their first 120 days have been disappointing and regrettable.
Afenyo-Markin claimed the NDC has created two Ghanas. One is for them and their party, while the other is for those they see as enemies. He shared these views on Eyewitness News on Citi FM.
He stated that upon taking office, the NDC terminated many Ghanaians' jobs in state institutions. The Chief of Staff's letter mentioned dismissing those employed after December 7 elections if there were irregularities. Afenyo-Markin found this approach flawed and noted a mass dismissal occurred.
He highlighted that teachers and nurses faced job losses too. Haruna Iddrisu spoke about validating teachers, but no evidence shows reinstatement for those dismissed.
Afenyo-Markin also criticized the NDC's economy pledge. He emphasized that Mahama's government has failed to create jobs with their "one job, three shifts" promise. They claimed they would implement a model to support private sector growth through incentives. Instead, he sees a lack of policy direction for businesses.
In contrast, Prof Stephen Adei praised President Mahama’s performance in his first 120 days. He believes anyone objective would agree Mahama has done well.
Some notable achievements by Mahama include:
- Launching the Mahama Cares social protection framework.
- Introducing free sanitary pads for schoolgirls.
- Starting the One Million Coders Programme to enhance youth digital skills.
- Initiating the Adwumawura Programme to promote job creation.
- Offering free tertiary education for persons with disabilities.
- Reviving tourism with the Black Star Experience program.
- Restructuring loss-making State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) for efficiency.
- Providing seed money for the Women’s Development Bank.
- Establishing an Accelerated Export Development Council.
- Investigating Akosombo dam spillage that affected thousands.
In summary, Afenyo-Markin reiterated that in 120 days, the NDC has created two Ghanas: one for themselves and one for others they consider enemies.
