Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, recently met with Ghanaians in Benin. This meeting is part of a government initiative to strengthen ties with Ghanaians abroad.
The event took place in Cotonou and included students, women’s groups, business owners, and community leaders. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs aims to connect directly with Ghanaians in the diaspora. They want to listen to their needs and provide support through embassy outreach programs.
Hon. Ablakwa stated that ministry officials will regularly visit Ghanaian embassies and communities. This will help them understand the challenges faced by citizens living abroad. “There is no better way to serve Ghanaians abroad than to meet them where they are,” he said.
Currently, over 2,000 Ghanaians live in Benin. During the meeting, community members shared several concerns. These included issues like non-recognition of Ghanaian consular identity cards and trade restrictions between Benin and Ghana.
They also mentioned delays in obtaining the Ghana Card and lack of support for stranded travelers. Another major issue was harassment faced by traders transporting goods to Ghana. Community members urged the government to expedite the Representation of the People Amendment Law (ROPAL). This law would allow Ghanaians abroad to vote in national elections.
Moses Oklu Tetteh, President of the Ghana Association of United Communities in Benin, spoke on behalf of the community. He asked the government for more support regarding trade-related challenges and documentation issues.
In response, Minister Ablakwa assured them that the government cares about its citizens abroad. He highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at easing cross-border movement and improving consular services.
He also announced a $2 million emergency fund for Ghanaians facing crises abroad. This fund will assist with legal issues, health emergencies, or natural disasters.
“Our government has not forgotten you,” he said about this initiative. The meeting concluded on a positive note as community members appreciated the Minister's visit and responsiveness to their concerns.
