Foreign Affairs Ministry rolls out chip-embedded biometric passport

The new chip-embedded biometric passport was launched in Accra.

This passport technology has been in development for ten years. It replaces the old version and meets global standards. The e-passport includes enhanced security features and complies with international aviation requirements.

The system promises faster service delivery. Standard applications will be processed within 15 working days. Expedited services are available within 24 hours. This solution is also cost-effective for the government and applicants.

As part of the 24-Hour Economy initiative, passport offices will operate shifts. This ensures continuous service across the country.

During the launch, symbolic copies were given to Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and other dignitaries. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced a partnership with Ghana Post. He stated, "We offer free home delivery services through Ghana Post." Applicants with address issues can collect documents at designated post offices.

The Ministry highlighted that this upgrade shows Ghana's commitment to modern technology. It aims to improve convenience for citizens when acquiring passports.

The new travel document has an advanced microprocessor chip. This chip securely stores biometric data and photographs of the holder.

The system will integrate with the National Identification Authority's database for identity verification.

The e-passport includes multiple security features. These include anti-fraud mechanisms with latent and patent indicators. Such measures enhance document security and protect against forgery.

This chip-embedded passport marks a significant advancement over Ghana's current system. It offers citizens a more secure and internationally recognized travel document.

Officials present at the event included Deputy Chief of Staff Stanislav Dogbe, Minister of Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu, and others like Sam George, Rita Sraha, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, and Justice Srem-Sai.
