Former Akuapem North MP sues TikToker; demands GH₵5m for defamation

Former Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Nana Yaw Kyei, has initiated legal action against TikTok influencer Abena Kyei, seeking a staggering GH₵5 million in damages for defamation. The lawsuit stems from allegations made by the social media personality, which Kyei claims have tarnished his reputation and caused significant emotional distress.

In a recent video posted on TikTok, Abena alleged that the former MP had engaged in corrupt practices while in office. Kyei contends that these accusations are not only false but also damaging to his public image and political career. He argues that the statements made by Abena lack any factual basis and were intended to incite public disdain against him.

Kyei’s legal representatives filed the suit at an Accra High Court, highlighting the need to uphold accountability on digital platforms where misinformation can spread rapidly. This case underscores growing concerns about the impact of social media on individual reputations and the potential consequences of unverified claims made online. The proceedings will examine freedom of speech versus the rights of individuals against defamation.
