Former Deputy Energy Minister slams govt over utility tariff hikes

Collins Adomako-Mensah, a former Deputy Energy Minister, has criticized the government. His comments follow the announcement of increased electricity and water tariffs. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced this hike, effective May 3, 2025.

The tariff increase is part of PURC’s quarterly review process. It aims to ensure revenue stability for utility providers while minimizing consumer burden. Electricity tariffs will rise by an average of 14.75%. Water tariffs will increase by 4.02%.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom, Mr. Adomako-Mensah expressed disappointment and surprise at the news. He referenced promises made by the ruling government during the 2024 election campaign. “I’m a little bit surprised about the announcement because of the rhetoric prior to the 2024 election,” he said.

He recalled statements from President John Dramani Mahama and NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia. They suggested that electricity tariffs would be reduced to support a proposed 24-hour economy. “If you recall, this issue became topical when political figures made some pronouncements,” he noted.

Mr. Adomako-Mensah explained that reducing electricity tariffs was part of their campaign message for businesses opting for a 24-hour economy. Despite his criticism, he recognized financial challenges facing PURC. He highlighted issues with purchasing power in U.S. dollars versus selling in Ghana cedis.
