Former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has announced his candidacy. He aims to become the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) flagbearer.
On May 1, 2025, he shared an artwork on Facebook. The post hinted at his ambition to lead the party. It included the hashtag #TheAdutwumFactor.
His announcement follows recent changes within the NPP. Kennedy Agyapong, a former presidential aspirant, withdrew from the party's 'Thank You Tour' due to security concerns. Additionally, party Chairman Stephen Ntim has reduced his involvement in this tour.
There are also reports of tension between former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Dr. Bawumia may run for flagbearer without Akufo-Addo’s support. This divide is linked to Akufo-Addo’s backing of Bryan Acheampong for the 2028 presidential bid.
Mr. Adutwum's entry adds to a growing list of potential candidates for the NPP flagbearership. This suggests a competitive race for the party's top position.
In related news, former NPP presidential candidate Kwabena Agyei Agyepong has made a suggestion. He urged the NPP to focus on its presidential primaries first before other internal elections. He believes they should elect their next candidate by December 2025 for proper preparation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
