Former Education Minister corrects Free SHS beneficiary figures, now 3.5 million

Former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has revised the estimated number of students who have benefited from Ghana’s Free SHS policy, lowering the figure from over five million to 3.5 million.

Speaking on Joy News' AM Show, he admitted to a miscalculation, attributing it to an accounting error.

Despite this correction, Dr. Adutwum reaffirmed the policy’s transformative impact on education, stressing the need for continued support to sustain its success.

He highlighted how Free SHS has eased financial burdens on families and expanded access to secondary education.

Serving as Education Minister from 2021 to 2024, he emphasized that the initiative has enabled millions of students to complete their education without financial constraints.
