Former KATH CEO Prof. Addai expresses gratitude to Asantehene, others

Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, the former CEO of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), expressed his gratitude to key figures. He thanked the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and President John Dramani Mahama for their support.

In a statement from Kumasi, he acknowledged their trust in him. Prof. Addai-Mensah received a standing ovation during his final staff durbar on Monday. He highlighted the Asantehene’s role in renovating the hospital under the Heal Komfo Anokye Project.

He also thanked Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye for facilitating his appointment. “My time as CEO has been defining,” he said. He appreciated everyone who supported him during his tenure.

Prof. Addai-Mensah served as CEO from December 1, 2022, to April 2024. His leadership led to significant improvements at KATH, earning praise from staff and the public. He nearly doubled the hospital’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF) from GHC 115.8 million in 2022 to GHC 222.6 million in 2024.

This increased revenue allowed for major investments in infrastructure and services. The Dialysis Unit expanded from two machines to twenty, improving access significantly. Other projects included a GHC 4.4 million renovation of the Main Theatre and upgrades to the Physiotherapy Unit costing GHC 1.6 million.

He also initiated a weekend duty system for Directors and Deputy Directors for better oversight on non-working days. Prof. Addai-Mensah mobilized millions of Ghana cedis through personal networks for hospital operations and patient care.

Notable donations included medical equipment from various organizations and clubs in Kumasi. He abolished fees for patients using public toilets at KATH and launched a courier service with Ghana Post for medication delivery.

Additionally, he raised the annual staff medical allowance from GHC 3,000 to GHC 4,000 after over ten years without an increase. This change led to benefits rising sharply from GHC 750,000 in 2022 to nearly GHC 4 million in 2024.

His tenure also saw several hospital blocks renovated with private sector support from companies like Neuce Paints and Alex Nuamah Enterprise. Under his leadership, KATH acquired new vehicles worth GHC 2.6 million to address transportation challenges.

Prof. Addai-Mensah's time as CEO is viewed as transformative by many staff members who honored him with a standing ovation during his farewell event.
