Former Madina MP Criticizes Security Approach In Wontumi Arrest Attempt

Former Member of Parliament for Madina, Alhaji Amadu Sorogho, criticized security agencies. He spoke about their excessive force during the attempted arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako. Boasiako is known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Sorogho appeared on Channel One TV on May 26, 2025. He questioned why a heavily armed team was sent to Wontumi’s home. This operation took place on Friday, May 23, and has faced public scrutiny.

"Wontumi was invited but refused to go," Sorogho said. "I don’t support so many armed men pursuing one person." He added that there are lawful ways to ensure compliance, like going to court.

He acknowledged that security personnel may have acted legally. Reports indicate they obtained a warrant for the operation. However, Sorogho believes the execution was flawed and too aggressive.

"I'm glad they had a warrant," he stated. "It's not just what they did; it's how they did it."

Chairman Wontumi went to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today with his legal team. His team included former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame and ex-MP Andy Appiah-Kubi. This appearance followed a standoff last Friday where he assured officers he would cooperate.

The failed arrest attempt caused immediate outrage among NPP supporters. Many gathered at Wontumi’s residence to condemn what they saw as political misuse of state power. Videos showing armed security personnel have gone viral, sparking debate over their role in politics.
