President John Mahama has launched the Adwumawura initiative. This program aims to create jobs for marginalized groups. It includes individuals who have engaged in illegal mining, known as galamsey.
During the launch in Kumasi on Monday, President Mahama highlighted key priorities. Vulnerable groups include people with disabilities and those with little education. The initiative will also focus on individuals from conflict zones.
"At least 60% of beneficiaries will be women and girls," he stated. The program targets people living with disabilities, unemployed youth, and out-of-school youth. It also aims to support rural populations and youth from conflict-affected areas.
The president emphasized the need to help young people involved in galamsey. "We want to shift them away from illegal mining," he said. The goal is to provide opportunities for them to start their own businesses.
This initiative comes as the country fights against illegal mining. Authorities are seeking solutions to address environmental damage caused by these activities. Illegal mining has harmed freshwater bodies and destroyed forest reserves.
The president believes this initiative will reduce participation in illegal mining. It aims to help individuals transition into sustainable livelihoods.
