Court Proceedings
Four employees of Pziram Eye Clinic in Baatsonaa, Spintex, have pleaded not guilty. They faced charges of conspiracy and stealing at the Circuit Court in Accra. The court was presided over by Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah.
The accused are Charles Ofoe Akunor, a nurse; Samuel Kutorglo; Anita Ayoni; and Alyse Deasi Amenyedzi, a cashier. They were charged with two counts: conspiracy to commit a crime and stealing. Both charges violate the Criminal Offences Act of 1960 (Act 29).
The four were remanded into police custody. They are scheduled to reappear in court on Monday, May 19, 2025.
Chief Inspector Daniel Appiah-Ofori led the prosecution. He stated that the incident occurred on January 2, 2025, at the clinic where all four worked. The prosecution claims they acted together to steal GH¢475,000 from Dr. Charles Mensah, the clinic’s CEO.
Dr. Mensah noticed inconsistencies in financial records after patient payments went missing. An internal audit from January 1, 2024, to January 1, 2025, revealed this missing amount.
When confronted about the funds, the accused initially denied any wrongdoing. However, after a police complaint on January 22, 2025, they were arrested. Each admitted taking various amounts of money during their cautioned statements.
Charles Ofoe allegedly took GH¢3,500. Samuel Kutorglo claimed GH¢4,000 was missing from his drawer. Alyse Amenyedzi confessed to taking GH¢1,600 due to economic hardship. Anita Ayoni said she took GH¢2,000 to pay off a debt.
Despite these admissions, the prosecution insists that the total misappropriated amount is GH¢475,000. The case has been adjourned for further proceedings.
