Four years not enough to deliver dev’t – Goodluck Jonathan

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has criticized the four-year presidential term in Ghana and Nigeria. He believes this term is too short for sustainable national development.

Jonathan spoke at the Executive Leadership Retreat in Ada, Ghana. He addressed ministers and senior officials about governance challenges in West Africa. He pointed out that only Nigeria and Ghana have a four-year presidential term.

Most other African countries have five-year terms. Jonathan questioned what can be achieved in just four years. He emphasized that this short tenure limits a new president's ability to implement long-term policies.

He explained that a new president needs time to adjust. It often takes about a year to settle in. After two years of work, the next year is usually an election year. This leaves very little time for meaningful progress.

Jonathan's remarks come amid ongoing debates about presidential terms in both countries. These discussions focus on their effectiveness and impact on governance and national development.
