Francis Xavier Sosu, the MP for Madina, has plans to petition President John Dramani Mahama. He wants clear custodial terms for inmates on death row. This follows the recent abolition of the death penalty in Ghana.
Sosu is a member of Parliament's Human Rights Committee. He emphasized that changing death sentences to life imprisonment needs defined terms. This will prevent undue hardship and ensure justice for inmates.
He stated, “If we say those on death row are committed to 25 years imprisonment, it aligns with Article 17 of the 1992 Constitution.”
Sosu spoke to journalists during a visit to Nsawam Medium Security Prisons on May 19, 2025. He added that he and the Human Rights Committee will send a petition through the Attorney General. They aim for presidential intervention based on their committee's work.
