Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, spoke about the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy. He confirmed that the Mahama administration will keep this policy. This program was originally introduced by the Akufo-Addo government.
In an interview on Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Dafeamekpor said the Free SHS policy will not be canceled. He mentioned plans to reintroduce related legislation in Parliament. “The Free SHS Bill is to be relayed,” he explained.
He noted that the bill was delayed but will soon return. Dafeamekpor believes there won’t be many changes before it is presented again. When asked if the Mahama-led government would cancel Free SHS, he firmly replied, “Not at all, why would you do that?”
Additionally, the Mahama administration plans to extend Free SHS to private schools next academic year. This announcement came from the Ministry of Education on May 27. It occurred during the launch of new guidelines for selecting schools for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates.
Under these new guidelines, candidates can now choose seven schools instead of six. The selection period runs from May 27 to June 6.
