Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah (Rtd), a former Chief of Defense Staff, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its manifesto pledge to introduce free tuition for first-year tertiary students.
Speaking at O’Reilly Senior High School, he argued that parents should bear the cost of tertiary education, questioning its necessity and its impact on the economy.
He also called for a review of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, describing it as unsustainable and misdirected.
Nunoo Mensah suggested targeting scholarships for underprivileged students instead of the current universal approach, which has strained resources in schools.
The retired Brigadier General intends to share his concerns directly with President John Mahama, emphasizing the need for more pragmatic and targeted educational policies.
